COMPUTER FORENSICS
Notes:
TAN & WELD:
Tan and Weld originally of L0pht which is now merged with and doing business as @stake
Asked here by ACM to Talk
Selected the Topic of Forensics because it is an area people arent looking at strategically
Hoping to roll some strategics into this talk as well as discuss the tactical, tool-level details of forensics
L0PHT/ATSTAKE:
L0pht was founded in 1993
Started producing and publishing advisories to the web in 1996.
Viewed as a consumer watchdog/hacker thinktank receiving much press to that effect.
Testified in front of the Senate in 1998 on the state of the nations critical infrastructure.
Courted by Corporate interests for about two years as we tried to make L0pht a full time effort.
After many bad dates with the business community, found @stake, merged and launched January 6, 2000.
Increased our outputs on target for four fold in all areas (advisories, white-papers, public speaking)
Advised the president on topics relating to the Internet
Increased our ability to do business with companies that have interesting problems
Working toward putting a dent in the universe as R&D for @stake
Initially much consulting and R&D for L0pht but now mostly infrastructure and R&D
TAN:
Joined in 1996 and have worked on the business side of getting the original L0pht business entity up and running. Produced a Novell Netware advisory and enjoyed other projects more related to the club-house nature of the L0pht. Did some consulting as L0pht to bring in money. Testified before the Senate in 96 and noticed that business and government are looking at each other for leadership. Published a paper called CyberUL that looked at why computer security certifications dont work and what would be needed for them to work the biggest barrier there being the lack of consumer demand or at least the lack of a voice for it.
Now working with @stake R&D establishing methodologies for host hardening, penetration testing, product assessments and forensic services.
