User Questions

Chapters:

Responsibilities - Keys - Unix Lab - PC Lab (210 and 212) - Tools - [ User Questions ]

Most PC users are students in the CSU101 course, which teaches an introduction to the PCs, MS Word,MS Excel and MS Access. Proctors are encouraged to become familiar with these programs.

Here are some ways users can find answers:

CCIS UNIX help system
Typing "help" on any CCS UNIX machine puts you into our help system. You can find description of our computer facilities, campus maps, and answers to many questions, such as modem telephone numbers here. Proctors are encouraged to browse this system and recommend it to users.
Man Pages
UNIX provides on-line help with the man command. For example man elm prints the UNIX manual page for the elm mail system. man -k topic will list all commands addressing the topic. Some large CCS software systems have additional documentation in the /ccs/docs/software directory.
Learning UNIX
There are some fine introductory UNIX books available in the library and the bookstore.
CCIS HOWTO Pages
The Systems group produces helpful documents on several computer topics. These can be found on the CCIS HOWTO Page
Newsgroups
The newsgroup ccs.systems.help is a good place for students to ask questions and find answers. There are many other newsgroups (such as gnu.emacs.help) where users can find help to many technical questions. Proctors should monitor the newsgroup ccs.announce.
DAC help desk
For Northeastern computer systems outside CCS, including the lynx system, you can refer students to the Division of Academic Computing help desk at4 Hayden, x4224.
Mail systems
When users need help from the CCS computer staff, they should send mail to systems.
