Proctor Manual
Proctor Responsibilities

Chapters:

[ Responsibilities ] - Keys - Unix Lab - PC Lab (210 and 212) - Tools - User Questions

1. Be On Time
The Computer labs are the only place where many students can do their homework. Students and faculty expect the labs to be open as posted. Labs cannot be open unless a proctor is present. Late proctor arrivals will not be tolerated! You can and will be fired for repeated tardiness.
2. Labs Must Not Be Left Unattended
If you must leave the lab during your shift, find another proctor to sit for you or get someone from the systems staff. You can and will be fired for unattended labs.
3. Proctors Are Responsible For Their Shifts
If you are scheduled to work a shift and can not make it send mail to proctors asking for someone to cover for you. You should also give up the shift on the trade broker. This does NOT transfer the responsibility away from you. You are still responsible for that shift until someone else relieves you. Essentially, proctors can take responsibility for a shift, proctors cannot give the responsibility away. You can and will be fired for repeated abscences.
4. Keep The Lab Clean
Typically, there tends to be a heap of stray papers and things like pen caps, broken pencils, etc. Please collect and place paper in recycling bins and place other garbage into the trash cans.
5. Monitor against theft of computer hardware.
In case of an emergency, or if you have a reasonable cause to suspect that a theft has just taken place, call the NU Police immediately at x2121 and send mail to lab-admin.
6. Check all the machines, notify systems of any problems.
During your shift, check all the machines in the lab. Report any machine problems hardware, or software, to the systems group by sending email to both systems and lab-admin.
7. Keep the printer full
Keep the printers full of paper. Printer paper and cartridges are available in room 102. If supplies run low contact the lab-admin.
8. Keep the Lab Quiet
The labs are intended to be productive work areas. Computer games must be played with the volume off. Games are allowed only when there are no students waiting to use computers. If the person hassles you in any way send mail to both systems and lab-admin plus you could phone the NU Police at x2121.
9. Answer general questions
Proctors should try to assist users, often by suggesting where to go for help. See the Answering User Questions section of this manual for help.
10. Fix minor problems, especially printers
Proctors should try to keep the printers printing. If the machine or printer simply will not reboot or reset correctly, then send mail to both systems and lab-admin.
11. Email
Your primary communication with the proctors is via Email. If some action is needed from the systems staff, such as repairing a broken machine, send mail to both systems and lab-admin. Other mail concerning your payment, your proctor responsibilities, etc. should be sent to lab-admin only.

Another way to think of it: systems has super-user permission and the tools to fix broken or confused machines. Lab-admin is a student who tallies the data so you can get paid on time.

Mail sent to proctors will be seen by all proctors. You should send mail to proctors when offering a shift that you know you will be unable to attend. Please mail the appropriate audience

12. Proctors must always carry their NU ID
The NU police occasionally check proctor IDs, and match the name to the police proctor list. Plus you need your ID to access the lab anyways.
