Homework 1

Worst User Interface

1 Unix VI editor

•  Command base interface: User has to remember all the commands.

•  If user needs to enter some command then each time he needs to enter esc to change the mode.

•  If user doesn't save and directly enter quit command then it doesn't ask for saving and user will lose data.

•  Commands used in VI editor are totally different then any other editor so it takes time for user to be used to VI editor.

•  Command entered by user doesn't display on the screen so some time user might confuse with it.

2 Website www.paidimagehosting.com

•  Design of home page is worst.

•  Home page is very large.

•  Whenever user click on any link from home page, user will see the same content on the home page because content changed by clicking on link can be see only by scrolling.

•  On registration page they have used option button for selecting free but there is only one option so there is no need of option button. I think there should be flashing label in place of option button indicating that registration is free.

•  When we click on advertise on the home page, advertise opens in the same page in place of different page so user will go out of our website.

Best User Interface

1 MBTA ticketing machine

•  Each screen gives proper information about the content.

•  Fonts are really big so user with weak eye can also excess it easily.

• Touch screen user interface so user do not need to type anything and there is no typing error.

•  Each page has only required information.

•  Sequence of steps are designed such that user do not need to remember anything.

•  Within few touch screen clicks user is able to get monthly pass.

2) Google Earth

•  All the functionality of the software is on the main page, there is no sub menu.

•  User can hold the map and move it just like scrolling the page.

•  They have search facility to search the place of your need and they have also given example bellow search box that how user should enter the location in the search box.

•  We can easily zoom by double clicking the area which you want to see closely. You don't need to zoom and then scroll to the particular area.
